Genre: Animated/Kids

Grade: A-

Well, after a couple of weeks chickening out of going to see The Witch, I did manage to get to the theatre and see Zootopia and it was very much worth it!

Zootopia is about a little bunny called Judy Hopps who dreams of and becomes the first bunny officer in Zootopia. Judy has plenty of belief in herself but unfortunately that’s not the case for most people including the Chief (Elba) who doesn’t want her there. She stakes her career on cracking the case of missing predators with the help of a con-artist fox called Nick Wilde.

I’m going to start with the iffy because it’s so little but the movie does drag at times. (I admit I’m not really the target audience 🙂 ) Also this is definitely a message movie. Discrimination is bad in all its forms. Don’t judge people by their covers… It’s a great message of course and I’m usually someone who gets annoyed when I feel like I’m being hit over the head with it.

This movie… walked that line. But I never felt like it crossed it. In large part because-

I mean look at that adorable face and those big sincere eyes! She makes it work!

This movie was really lovely in terms of look. I really felt like the city and the animals in it came alive and they do take some time to lay out how the city works which is always helpful. I really enjoyed the voice work as well. Jason Bateman was excellent and is it possible to perfectly cast an animated bunny? Maybe I spent too much time watching her as Snow White back in the day but Ginnifer Goodwin was well-cast for Judy.

It was one of those things where I could actually completely imagine Judy being human form (though I preferred her animated- if that makes any sense).

Plus Shakira’s Try Everything was in my head from practically the beginning. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing for some people. It’s not going to be Let It Go levels of crazy but it’s definitely catchy.

Recommend: Yes. I’d definitely recommend it for kids too though because it was slow at times I’m not sure about the ages. I already downloaded the song and I’m likely going to be purchasing Judy and Nick dolls. For my nephew, yeah, that’s what I’ll say!
