Assassin’s Creed

Director: Justin Kurzel

Grade: C

I was really hoping this would be one of those movies that I liked a little bit better than the reviews. It’s the story of Callum Lynch who is forced into a private experiment that sends his mind back in time to connect with an ancestor and find an artifact that can save or destroy the world (depending on who found it of course.) Yeah, there was a lot going on and a whole lot of speeches and I spent most of the movie wracking my brain trying to figure out who played his mother for like three seconds in the beginning because she looked so damned familiar.

(It’s Essie Davis.)

There was another point in the movie where I was trying mightily not to fall asleep because I snore.

I don’t want to make it sound like this was a horrible movie. Because it is well shot and pretty to look at. The animus is an interesting idea and I liked the way it looked in the movie. I also liked the burning of the “infidels” part. But that might have been me being weird. The performances are good. But I was hoping for more. I love Fassbender but, for me at least, there was not enough there to make Callum or Aguilar interesting. I like Marion Cotillard to but Sophie was a bit of a mess as a character.

His partner in the past could have been interesting as well and they could have fleshed that whole thing out a lot more with the two of them. But she was just kind of there. Honestly, I don’t know if she was ever even given a name in the movie.

Now this is the part where I point out my friend who is familiar with the games liked the movie a lot more than I did. But in the end I thought this was a movie with a whole lot of potential and talent behind it that felt totally empty and just fell flat for me.

Recommend: Well, it’s very pretty and the fighting is good but otherwise no. It can wait for home viewing.
