2017 Mid-Year Wrap-Up!

Hela Breaks the Hammer

Prediction for the end of the year: I will own an embarrassing amount of Hela merchandise!

I’m going to keep this round-up of the first part of 2017 super simple and try not to cry about the fact that we’re halfway through because while 2017 might be halfway over, at least entertainment wise, I think the fun stuff is still to come.

Favorites and Recommendations Below:

FAVORITE BOOKS of 2017:

I would say a definite tie…

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is about the shooting of an unarmed black man by police and the effects on the only witness his childhood friend Starr & the neighborhood they live in. It’s really one of the best debut novels I’ve read in ages.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor is about Lazlo Strange and his quest for knowledge concerning the lost city of Weep & what happens when you get what you want. It’s definitely the book that made me go, “Why have I never read Laini Taylor before?”

But actually it’s a tie for second because I also finally read:

The Book Thief

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

It’s a tale told by Death concerning a young girl trying to survive in World War II Germany. I was intrigued. I loved the characters. My heart broke. I loved the writing style (the narrator!). I think sometimes I put off certain books because I’m afraid they won’t live up to the hype but this one certainly did.

FAVORITE MOVIES of 2017:

I definitely haven’t seen as many movies as I wanted to yet & I seemed to have fallen into a bit of a slump after Wonder Woman but hoping to break out of that because July alone is pretty stacked!

My favorite movie of the year so far has got to be:

Logan and Laura 2017

Hugh Jackman and Dafne Keen in Logan

Logan (directed by James Mangold) If you haven’t seen it yet check it out. Aside from being beautifully acted and directed it has the best father-son-father-daughter road trip dynamics I’ve seen in a long time. Also it made me sob. Not a little bit either but more like people asking, “Honey, are you okay?”

They really need to keep the lights completely off for the entirety of the credits in movie theaters these days.

The familial dynamic also messed me up in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 even though I didn’t like that one as much as the first.

Second Favorite as it stands right now:

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman (directed by Patty Jenkins) Great chemistry. Great acting. Great score. The no-man’s scene alone was enough to push it over the edge for me. It stumbled a bit after that and just when I’m thinking DCEU might pull this off apparently WB wanted to cut the no man’s scene completely.

Favorite Television:

Yeah, well. I’m a couple of episodes away from finishing American Gods which would make that the first series I’ve finished this year! I’m also working my way through (and enjoying) LegionRiverdale and the last season of Orphan Black with The Defenders (August) and Stranger Things season 2 (October) still to drop.

Entertainment wise I think the last half of 2017 has potential to be awesome! I just hope it will be the same personally!
