Anne Hathaway in Colossal

Colossal

Directed By: Nacho Vigalondo

Grade: A

Anne Hathaway is a down on her luck party girl forced to move back to her childhood home. While there she comes to learn that she may be intimately connected to the giant monster ravaging Seoul.

This movie was one of the most interesting I’ve seen in a while. It totally wasn’t what I expected though but it’s nice to see a movie where I genuinely am surprised and don’t know where the story is going.

Colossal

Keeping it spoiler free Anne Hathaway is great here. These are the kind of roles I think she’s best in. Gloria’s a freaking mess. We first meet her while her boyfriend is kicking her out but Hathaway makes it work. She’s a mess in that relatable way. And considering how insane the monster stuff seemed and should have been it totally worked for me.

Gloria's Monster Self

Gloria is also not without horror and guilt when she realizes what’s going on.

Ugh. It’s hard to talk about this one without spoilers when you should really go into it unspoiled. The cast is pretty small all of them were good in their roles. Jason Sudeikis, who is someone I don’t usually like, plays Gloria’s childhood friend Oscar and he’s also top notch. The monster looked good and some parts with the dancing and such (seen in the previews) were a good laugh.

Jason Sudeikis Colossal

If I had one nitpick I would have liked a little bit more information on one of the characters but then again to be honest it’s not necessary. You can fill in the blanks on that one yourself. I did.

I will say though that this is much less of a comedy than I had assumed from the previews. In fact it takes a seriously turn toward dark. But really just a different, enjoyable and well-acted movie all the way around.

Recommend: Yes.
